Homebrew Atari 7800 Games (2020-2024)

A hobby of mine – developing new games for old systems. I experimented with different genres, typically ones missing or underrepresented in this relatively obscure game console.

The Atari 7800 in particular is an interesting platform, occuring during a transition from consoles like the Atari 2600 and ColecoVision to the generation of consoles that included the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Master System. The Great Game Crash occured during this time, as well as a general change in a lot of how home console games were designed. Arcade-like experiences, while never going away, tended to be replaced by longer ones – the 7800 was technically capable of both, but its library for the most part (with a few odd exceptions) tended towards the arcade mentality while having a unique technical layout that differed from the more tile-based paradigm of the Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Master System.
