EMOVAC: Mixed Reality over 5G (2018)

A mixed reality experience involving Batman, made in collaboration with AT&T, Ericsson, Intel and Warner Bros. The goal was to show a proof-of-concept demonstrating a remote server sending real time graphical information to a headset, reducing the need for computer processing (and weight and heat) on the client side.

The user was brought into an escape-room scenario, where Batman villain Scarecrow attempts to use the EMOVAC (a fictional precursor to 5G) to broadcast fearful images. Viewing and interacting with spiders, heights (the floor digitally drops out beneath the viewer), and finally Scarecrow himself coming out of the projection screen and walking around the player. Batman comes to the rescue, with the two comic book characters raging across the empty storefront used for the installation.

The headset was a repurposed VIVE with pass-through rendering, and an actual 5G antenna was set up to send visuals over the air to the computer running the headset. Certain measures had to be taken to incorporate elements like masking the user’s hands and feet as the interacted with digital elements.
